Get back to the basics
This fall the West Vancouver Soccer Club plans to “let the game be the teacher” with an innovative street soccer program aimed at kids ages five to seven.
The program, which kicks off in September, takes a unique and fun approach to the sport known as “discovery learning,” which means the games are often self-directed by the children themselves.
Bill Sparling, President and Head of Coaching and Player Development at the WVSC, says the street soccer program is about giving young players a positive introduction to the world’s most popular game.
In street soccer there are no lines, lectures, or laps around the field. Kids are allowed to play freely, with little or no input from adults, which fosters imagination, creativity, and a love for the game.
“It’s all about having fun, and developing basic skills like agility and balance,” says Sparling. “We try to stay away from the competitive side of the sport.”
At its core, street soccer is designed to give the game back to kids, providing an alternative to “overly coached” and “overly structured” soccer programs.
For more information on the program, which runs Saturday at Hugo Ray Park, contact the West Vancouver Soccer Club at 604-922-4261 or email soccer@westvansoccer.com.

WVSC 'Street Soccer' program
|
|
The Street Soccer program runs from September to the end of February.
Purpose
- To give the game back to the kids
- To instil a love for the game
- To develop volunteer facilitators into future coaches
- To educate parent on positive sideline behaviour
- To show why “Soccer is a Player’s Game” and “To Let the Game be the Teacher”
What was Street Soccer?
- Soccer is the undisputed #1 game in the world and the primary way kids around the world have developed their ball skills is through ‘street soccer’. Most pro players did not see a coach or join a club until the age of 12.
- Traditionally, kids played in open spaces, on the street, or anywhere they could put together a field. The kids directed this free play with little input from adults, and carried out the creation and management of the game.
- They played everyday, sometimes for hours, no subs, no lines, no boring drills, lectures or laps, and, no parents or coaches pacing up and down the sidelines yelling instructions. The kids observed other players, became self-reliant, self-directed and expressed their imagination and creativity. Although ‘discovery learning’ is more time-consuming than traditional drills and coaching, in the end this process actually speeds up development.
- All over the world, this game is disappearing. The risks of modern life and the rise of organised youth programs have all but eliminated the unstructured, child-centred games of the past. The consequences of these changes are being felt deeply in soccer countries around the world. Even in North America, many amateur sport organisations are realizing that too much structure in youth activity is not conducive to the development of players.
- Unfortunately, there is little free time in modern life and unstructured outside play has been replaced with the obligatory overly coached and overly structured soccer time.
The Street Soccer program, as adopted by the West Vancouver Soccer Club and other Lower Mainland organisations, is designed to give the game back to the kids. We are asking parents to support this new approach to youth soccer and encourage you to take the soccer ball, throw it outside and send your young ones after it!

Please DO NOT go directly to our Technical Department for concerns regarding your team. Our Head Coach and Assistant Head coach are available to provide you with technical advice and support only. Although our staff coaches might have a sympathetic ear for your situation, ultimately they are not the people who will assist you in most cases. We do not want to discourage open relationships amongst our Club members and officials, but in order for us to work as efficiently as possible we need everyone to adhere to these guidelines.
All Club officials, including AGCs, are listed on the WVSC web site Click here for all current WVSC contact information.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support.
Regards, Bill Sparling President West Vancouver Soccer Club

WVSC ‘Street Soccer’ Details and Instructions
|
The West Vancouver Soccer Club offers STREET SOCCER to all U5/U6/U7 players wanting to get their soccer career started. The program takes place on Saturdays at Hugo Ray Park and is an introductory program that teaches kids about the skills and rules of how to play the game.
Format9:30 – 10:30am Boys U 7
11:00 – 12:00pm Boys U 5/6
1:00 - 2:00pm Girls U 7
2:30 -3:30 pm Girls U 5/6
On the first day of the program, players will be randomly split into coloured teams. In the past, players were taken directly to their field where they immediately began playing mini-games against other colours. This year, the club has added a new component; before heading off to their field with their Street Soccer Coach, the players will be shown the “drill of the day”. Once they have seen it, they will be lead off to their field where they will be guided through the drill they just watched. The drills will touch on a variety of topics such as skills, rules, teamwork, and an area called physical literacy (i.e. teaching the children coordination and important motor skills necessary to learn at this age). The drill will be scheduled to take approximately 10 min, and after it is done, players will begin their small-sided games against other colours.
The idea behind Street Soccer and the small-sided games is to “LET THE GAME BE THE TEACHER”. In other words, it is to let the kids lean just by playing … AND THEY WILL!
The main concern of the club is to create an environment which is positive and fun, an environment that fosters learning and a love of the sport.
Parent Expectations:Please DO
- Cheer for and encourage the players
- Reinforce good plays, teamwork and sportsmanship
Please DON’T
- Coach or direct children from the sidelines
- Criticize any players, rules, or coaches
- Put any emphasis on the score , winning or losing
The focus must be on fun and development. The pressure to win and not to lose should not impact our players until a much older age.
Parent Coaches: This year the Club has added a parent - coach component to the program for those parents wishing to get involved or who plan to coach in future years. Their role will be to assist the Street Soccer Staff coaches with running the drill of the day and to help organize and encourage the players during the games. Parent coaches will wear lanyards to identify themselves.
Field Changes, and Phone Line:If Hugo Ray Fields are closed due to to inclement weather, the field will be changed to an alternate field, when possible and reported on the Fields Line (604-926-6863). Families should check the Fields Line on Fridays, after 1:00pm. Field changes/alternates will also be reported on our website www.westvansoccer.com home page, Handy Links - Field Status Page.
